MCCQE Part I Question Types Explained
Short- Menu Questions
Write-In Questions
One response per box: Follow the instructions! If it says “List four diagnoses,” you get four boxes, one for each answer. Cramming more risks a zero.
Specificity is key: “Thyroid disease” won’t cut it if the answer is “hyperthyroidism.”
Generic names for drugs: Unless asked otherwise, stick to generic names.
Keep it concise: Single words or short phrases are usually the way to go. Common tests can be typed as acronyms or short forms, but make sure they’re clear and unique.
Spelling doesn’t matter: As long as your response clearly indicates what you meant, a typo won’t penalize you.
Responding to Questions
Exact number of responses: Exceed the limit, even if your answer includes the right ones, and you’ll get a zero.
Maximum responses: Don’t overshoot, but also don’t feel obligated to fill all the slots. Choose wisely!
“As many as appropriate” questions: Think about what you’d do in a real-life clinical situation. Don’t just fill space to “guarantee” the right answer.

Bonus
On exam day, you'll have access to examples showing what counts as one answer and what doesn't for write-in questions. Use them to your advantage!

Inside Abzi Academy's CDM Course

Overlooking the Big Picture
CDM is about applying your knowledge, not just regurgitating facts. Focus on understanding the underlying principles that connect symptoms, diagnoses, and treatment options. Remember, the exam isn't just about memorizing disease names. It's about strategic reasoning in a clinical setting.

Neglecting The Clues
Don't jump to conclusions based on the first symptom or finding. CDM emphasizes critical thinking and differential diagnosis. Analyze all available information, including history, physical exam, and lab results, before forming a diagnosis. Ruling out less likely possibilities is just as important as identifying the most probable one.

Ignoring The Guidelines
CDM courses often introduce clinical practice guidelines and protocols. Familiarize yourself with these standardized approaches to common clinical scenarios. While flexibility in decision-making is valuable, knowing the established guidelines will demonstrate your understanding of best practices.

Falling For Biases
Be aware of your own cognitive biases and how they might influence your decision-making. Confirmation bias, for example, can lead you to favour evidence that confirms your initial diagnosis, overlooking alternative possibilities. Stay objective, consider all possibilities, and avoid jumping to conclusions based on preconceived notions.

Neglecting Communication
Effective communication is crucial in healthcare. Your CDM exam won't be an exception. Practice explaining your clinical reasoning and proposed interventions clearly and concisely.
