Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB)

If you’re planning to pursue a career in Canada, being able to communicate effectively in English or French is essential for your everyday life. The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is the standard used by the Canadian government to measure and recognize the English and French language abilities of immigrants and prospective immigrants.

Canadian Language Benchmark Scale of Ability

The CLB assesses CAN-DO language skills in four areas—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—and describes 12 levels of ability for each skill. Understanding the CLB and your language proficiency can help you meet immigration requirements and succeed in your career goals in Canada.

Stage I – BASIC

Stage II - INTERMEDIATE

Stage III – ADVANCED

How Your CLB Is Calculated

Both the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) are accepted language proficiency tests to demonstrate one’s proficiency in English for immigration purposes in Canada.

However, please note that the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is the standard used to assess and recognize the language abilities of individuals planning to immigrate to Canada.
